Income Tax Calculator — What do you actually keep?

Drop in your salary. We'll break down the tax, the Medicare levy, and your real take-home — then show how it ranks.

What you enter

  • Gross annual income
  • Financial year
  • Tax residency
  • Medicare levy
  • HELP/HECS repayment

How this is calculated

We apply the resident (or non-resident) tax brackets for the financial year you select — FY 2026–27 uses the 15% lowest marginal rate that took effect on 1 July 2026. From gross income we calculate tax per bracket, subtract the Low Income Tax Offset where it applies (up to $700, phasing out at $66,667), add the 2% Medicare levy with the single low-income phase-in, and optionally add your compulsory HELP/HECS repayment under the marginal system. Take-home pay is what's left.

Common questions

Which tax brackets does this calculator use?

The brackets for the financial year you pick. For FY 2026–27: nil to $18,200, then 15% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000 and 45% above that. FY 2025–26 is identical except the second rate is 16%. The bracket-by-bracket breakdown is shown in the results so you can check every dollar.

Is the Medicare levy always 2%?

No. Below the low-income threshold ($28,011 for singles in 2025–26) you pay nothing, and it phases in at 10c per dollar just above the threshold before reaching the full 2%. This calculator models the single threshold; family thresholds differ.

Does it include HELP/HECS repayments?

Only if you switch the toggle on. It then applies the marginal repayment system that started in FY 2025–26 — you repay 15c per dollar of income above the threshold, not a percentage of your whole income. For a dedicated breakdown, use the HECS/HELP Repayment calculator.

What doesn't this calculator include?

The Medicare levy surcharge, private health insurance rebate, deductions, salary packaging, other tax offsets, and family Medicare thresholds. If those apply to you, your actual tax will differ — treat this as a close estimate, not a tax return.
