How this is calculated

Your current savings grow at your assumed return with annual contributions until retirement age. From there we calculate the level annual income that balance could sustain through to age 90 (an annuity at the same return), and how long funds last if you draw your desired income instead. All figures are nominal — inflation isn't deducted.

Common questions

How much do I need to retire in Australia?

The ASFA "comfortable" benchmark for a home-owning couple is roughly $73,000 a year (singles ~$52,000), suggesting a nest egg around $690,000 for a couple at 67 — because the Age Pension picks up much of the load. Without pension eligibility, 25× your annual spending is the standard FIRE-style estimate.

Does this include the Age Pension?

No — the projection is your own savings only. Most Australian retirees receive a full or part pension (currently ~$44,000/yr for a couple), which substantially reduces what your savings need to cover. Treat these results as conservative if you'll be pension-eligible.

What about inflation?

Figures are in future (nominal) dollars. Over 30 years at 2.5% inflation, prices roughly double — so halve the projected income to think about it in today's buying power, or use a real (after-inflation) return assumption of around 4–5% instead of 7%.
