Net worth by age in Australia: the real medians
The median Australian household's net worth is $579,200 — but age dominates everything. Households under 25 have a median of $34,600, rising to $999,900 at 55–64 as property equity and super compound. These are the latest detailed ABS wealth-survey figures (2019–20); asset prices have risen since, so treat them as a floor.

Median household net worth by age
Net worth is everything a household owns (home, super, savings, vehicles, investments) minus everything it owes (mortgage, loans, cards). The steep climb from 35 to 64 is mostly two engines running together: mortgage principal being paid down while property appreciates, and two decades of compulsory super compounding.
| Age band | Median household net worth |
|---|---|
| Under 25 | $34,600 |
| 25–34 | $175,700 |
| 35–44 | $401,000 |
| 45–54 | $799,600 |
| 55–64 | $999,900 |
| 65+ | $824,500 |
| All households | $579,200 |
Two honest caveats
- The data is 2019–20 — the most recent detailed ABS wealth distribution published (the 2023–24 survey was cancelled). Property prices and super balances have grown substantially since, so today's medians are meaningfully higher; percentile positions shift less, because the whole distribution moved together.
- These are household figures, not individual. A couple's combined position is compared against couple households — our ranking tool handles the household-type adjustment so you're not comparing a single income against couples.
What separates the median from the top
The distribution is brutally skewed: the top decile of households holds roughly 10× the median household's wealth, driven by investment property, business equity and large super balances. Moving from the median toward the top quartile is, for most households, a story about entering the property market earlier and salary-sacrificing into super sooner — the two compounding engines with tax advantages.
Common questions
What net worth puts you in the top 10% by age?
On the 2019–20 shape, roughly 5.6× your age band's median — about $2.3 million for 35–44-year-old households and $5.6 million at 55–64. The ranking tool computes your exact percentile from the full quintile curve rather than these rules of thumb.
Does net worth include super and the family home?
Yes, both — ABS net worth counts all assets including the home and super, minus all debts including the mortgage. If you exclude the home, medians drop sharply for older bands where home equity is the largest single asset.
How out-of-date is the 2019–20 data really?
House prices are up roughly 40–50% and super balances similarly since the survey period, so dollar medians are understated. But your percentile — position relative to others your age — is more stable, since the tide lifted most boats. We label every wealth result on the site with this vintage.
