Income by postcode: Australia's richest suburbs, measured two ways

It depends what you mean by richest. By average taxable income, the top of the list is exactly who you'd expect — Toorak ($277,708), Bellevue Hill, Vaucluse. But by median income the winners are Pilbara and Bowen Basin mining postcodes, where nearly everyone earns six figures. Both tables below are real ATO 2023–24 data across 2,246 postcodes.

Highest average income — the famous suburbs

Look at the median column: even in Toorak, the middle taxpayer reports $82,873. A handful of enormous incomes produce the $277,708 average — the textbook illustration of why averages mislead.

Highest median income — the mining towns

Medians reward places where everyone earns well, and nowhere does that like a mining town: high award wages, near-full employment, and few part-time or retired residents. The harbourside postcodes can't compete on this measure — their medians are pulled down by students, retirees and non-working wealth.

Common questions

Which is the 'right' measure for a rich suburb?

Average tells you where the biggest incomes cluster; median tells you what a typical resident earns. For 'where do high earners live', use averages. For 'would my income be normal here', use the median — that's what our postcode ranking tool compares you against.

Why is Toorak's median only $82,873?

Postcode income counts everyone who lodges a return there — students, retirees living off assets, non-working spouses. Wealthy suburbs are full of people with high wealth but modest taxable income, so the middle resident's taxable income is unremarkable even where the average is extreme.

Can I look up my own postcode?

Yes — the income rank tool covers all 2,246 postcodes with at least 100 taxpayers, straight from ATO Table 8. Enter your income and postcode and you'll see your percentile among your actual neighbours.
